Discover the coastal town of Monastir
Visiting Tunisia for a holiday is often related to its coastal cities and beautiful golden beaches. Monastir city is one of the most appreciated places by tourists and visitors. Let's discover it together without further delay!
Geographical location and characteristics
It is a small town in the Tunisian Sahel, located on a peninsula in the south-east of Monastir Gulf. It is 20 kilometres away from Sousse and 162 kilometres away from Tunis.
Despite the geographical and historical rapprochement between both cities, Monastir remains very different from its neighbouring town Sousse with its endless lively evenings.
Indeed, Monastir is more authentic, calmer and less crowded.
Enjoy Monastir and explore monuments
Monastir has a rich history that has gone through different eras.
History and heritage
The city bears witness to the Punic-Roman period before becoming one of the Arab-Muslim foundations, with Sousse and Kairouan. The story continues with the Ottomans who settled there in 1554, too.
During the modern history of Tunisia, Monastir regains its status as the governorate capital. Besides, it is Habib Bourguiba's hometown.
He is the first Tunisian president and a political leader much appreciated by the population. He has also built the most famous monuments in the city.
Visit Monastir city centre
You cannot miss the magnificent mausoleum of H. Bourguiba with its golden dome and 25-metres high minarets, as well as its large mosque with modern Islamic architecture.
On the other hand, the famous Ribat castle is one of the must-sees. It was built in 796 to protect the city from invaders. Today it offers a breathtaking 360° panoramic view over the whole town.
Your discovery should continue until the large squares of the town centre, the craft souk and the Marina of Monastir with its restaurants & cafés.
Finally, we highly recommend taking advantage of the Mediterranean blue water by scuba diving.
